Happiness: Something Is Going Right

Happiness is the signal that something is going well.

An illustration of happiness

Not everything. Almost never everything. But something, in this moment, in this pocket of your life, is right. The chemistry is where it should be. There's warmth here. A person you love is nearby. A meal you like is on the table. A piece of music you love is playing. The thing you were hoping for showed up. You made it home. You slept. Whatever it is, the reading is telling you: this is one of the good ones.

I bring up happiness in this series because it gets underread more often than any of the others. Anger, sadness, fear: those we tend to notice, if only because we've spent so much time trying to make them go away. Happiness slips by. It shows up quietly, we don't turn to face it, and it moves on. Then, later, we wonder why life felt so hard, because we didn't count the moments it wasn't.

Learning to read happiness, to notice it, to sit with it, to metabolize it into memory, is its own skill. It doesn't happen automatically. And it isn't optional if you want a life that feels like a life.

The mistake most of us were taught, especially those of us raised in environments where happiness was suspect or dangerous: happiness invites the fall. Better not to feel it fully; better to stay braced. This is one of the more devastating adaptations, because it means you don't stop bracing even when the coast is clear. The reading is coming in, the strip is showing you the good chemistry, and you're not looking at the strip.

Every emotion can be misread, ignored, buried, or hijacked. But the one that gets quietly denied to us the most, especially by our own trained caution, is often the one that came to say: this is one of the good ones.
