About

Hi, I'm Joanne

The way I picture therapy is part detective's board, part puzzle. There's the version with the red string, laying everything out and tracing the lines between things that never seemed connected until you see them next to each other. And there's the slower version: turning pieces over, finding where each one actually fits, noticing the ones that got forced into the wrong spot, and deciding together which to keep, reshape, or set down for good. Most of what brings people in makes sense once you can see the whole board. My job is to help you see it.

My approach draws primarily on narrative, psychodynamic, and person-centered work, with a relational and trauma-informed lens underneath. In plainer terms: I'm interested in the stories you've come to believe about yourself, where those stories came from, and the patterns that keep repeating even when you know better. Some of those pieces were solutions once, they got you through something, and the work isn't to rip them out but to understand them well enough that keeping or changing them becomes a real choice. How we get there bends to fit you, not the other way around.

Working together tends to feel less like being assessed and more like being accompanied while you sort through it. Early sessions are mostly about getting a feel for each other and for what you're carrying, no rush to name everything or solve it by week three. I'll ask questions, reflect back what I'm noticing, and be honest with you, including when a piece doesn't fit where you've been trying to place it. This kind of work asks something of both of us, and I take my half seriously.

I tend to work well with people who sense there's more going on beneath the presenting problem and want space to actually look at it. That often includes anxiety that won't quite explain itself, relationship and attachment patterns that keep recurring, identity and life-transition questions, grief, and the long tail of earlier experiences that still shape the present. If you've done therapy before and found it too surface-level, or you want a relationship rather than a technique, we'll probably work well together.

I don't put much stock in the idea that you have to find a therapist who matches you on background, diagnosis, or problem. I think a good therapist is a flexible one, someone who adjusts their approach to meet you, rather than expecting you to fit a method. The modalities I lean on aren't a fixed recipe; they're tools I draw from differently depending on who's in the room and what you actually need that day. If something isn't working for you, that's information for me to adapt, not a sign you're in the wrong place.

I'm bilingual and bicultural, and that shapes how I listen, especially around family, loyalty, and the quiet ways culture lives inside what we expect of ourselves. You won't have to explain certain things from scratch, and you also won't be reduced to them.

If any of this resonates, the next step is low-stakes: a brief consultation where you can get a sense of me and ask whatever you need to. You don't have to arrive with the problem neatly defined, figuring out what's actually going on is part of the work, not a prerequisite for starting it.
